The Sith - The Beginning
Outraged by this twisted view of all that the Jedi Order stood for, the Jedi Council of the time banished the Dark Jedi from their ranks. But the rogue Jedi continued to spread his message, and gathered followers to his new, dark order.
Using ancient beliefs from the distant past the new cult of the Sith grew, gaining in power until the hatred and rage of the dark side began to eat away at its very fabric. Ruthless internecine power struggles began to reduce the numbers of Sith, until Darth Bane took control.
Bane changed the Sith so that there could only ever be two Sith lords at any one time; a master and an apprentice. In this way the destabilising effects of the dark side were kept to a minimum, and the cult survived quietly until the time of Darth Sidious and his apprentice, Darth Maul.
By this time the Jedi Council had all but forgotten the threat of the Sith. When Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn was attacked by Darth Maul on the planet Tatooine the members of the Council were reluctant to accept that they had not foreseen the re-emergence of the Sith.
They finally accepted the existence of the Sith when Darth Maul was killed on the planet Naboo, but were still unable to detect who his master was. In the years that followed the power of the Sith grew, until the Galaxy was thrown into chaos by the start of the Clone Wars, the fall of the Old Republic and the rise of the Empire under Darth Sidious.
